Kavita Singh, Ph.D., serves as an associate professor at the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. She teaches and does research in Caribbean literature and culture, and is passionate about language, performance, and popular culture. 

Singh was born in Guyana, South America, and grew up in Trinidad and Tobago, before moving to New Jersey, where she went to high school and college. She completed her bachelor’s degree at Princeton University and earned her doctorate degree from Cornell University. She is fluent in Spanish and French and has recently started learning Haitian Creole. She loves to travel, and has lived in France, spent significant periods in various parts of Latin America, and regularly visits the Caribbean and Europe. On occasion, she undertakes research expeditions to the Trinidad Carnival. 

In her classes, Singh encourages her students to think about the intersection of the arts and the social and political aspects of our world, and she is particularly interested in questions of race, class, and gender, in relation not only to the Caribbean and the global South but also to the U.S. 

Singh is the Faculty-in-Residence (FIR) for Cougar Place and enjoys connecting with residents during monthly Sunday dinners and Coffer Hour events. CP residents can look forward to mindfulness meditation, a vegan feast, and an etiquette dinner as part of FIR programming this academic year.
